It takes WORK to get WORK. You are most likely to be successful in the fashion industry if you are prepared to think outside the box!

Write!! Write! And Write some more…. Write to the editor of a fashion are of your favourite lifestyle magazine’s with a proposal of the fashion content you would like to write about.

INTERN, INTERN, INTERN
If there’s anything that everyone from editors-in-chief to creative directors, have in common is that, early on their career, they either interne or assisted someone somewhere. Whether they know exactly what you want to do or not, internships and assisting position remain the best way to learn everything about the industry.

BLOG
A blog of one’s own is 100% a way to make it in fashion! You can create your own opportunities through your blog, but you have to put your heart and energy into it.
PUBLICIST
Here’s another route into fashion. Be part of the team that plans the show for fashion houses. You will soon find yourself planning photo shoots with clients, and you can make a real different to someone’s career.

YOU’RE IN THE DOOR, YOU’VE GOT AN INTERVIEW. HERE ARE SOME GREAT TIPS

• Go in there looking like you already work there, try to emulate those you are likely to work for.
• Talk intelligently about your successes and be positive in the way you talk about your background and interests.
• Be direct about what you’re looking to do and why. The more you know about what you want to do the more likely you are to get it. People who are vague will have a tougher time finding a job.
• Be like-able. Smile a lot. Connect with the person who’s interviewing you. You have to be the kind of person they want to work with.
• Be interested in something other than fashion. You don’t want to work in the business only because you’re a shopaholic.

Nigeria Loses Out As Aamito Stacie Lagum Wins Africa’s Next Top Model

Yesterday, Aamito Stacie Lagun emerged as winner for Africa’s Next Top Model.
The winner receives a 1-year modeling contract with New York based modeling agency DNA, $50,000 cash prize and product endorsement deals from P&G, Snapp and Etisalat amongst others.

Super Model, Alek Wek Makes Appearance At Music Meets Runway 2013

International super model Alek Wek made an appearance at this year’s Music Meets Runway fashion show which held at Eko Hotel and Suites on Saturday, December 21.
Wek joined host IK Osakioduwa on stage to introduce one of the show’s headlining designers Deola Sagoe. The South Sudanese British model then surprised guests when she brought her expertise to the runway as she modelled one of Sagoe’s collections.
Nigerian make-up artiste Bimpe Onakoya who worked with Alek Wek couldn’t hide her excitement. ‘Alek!! I’ve been waiting forever to do your makeup!! #alekwek #theamazingAlec #supermodel #makeup #musicmeetsrunway #fashionshow’, she wrote with a bunch of hashtags on her Instagram page as she posted a picture of the model backstage.

How 26 year old UNILAG Student won the MTN Young Designer of the Year 2013 Award.

Twenty-six year old Rodney Emeka, the Creative Director of McMeka, won the MTN Young Designer of the Year competition at the Lagos Fashion and Design Week 2013. He runs McMeka, a Lagos based menswear design label which solely focuses on bespoke tailoring which he founded in September 2011. The young PH bred designer came up against formidable names like Waneami, Diana aLa Vid (DLV), Ayo Van Elmar, Reni Smith, Ladunni Lambo, Sho by Adesola Obebe, Tumilla by Tumi Ladega, Kenneth Ize and Siaiano who were also shortlisted as finalists for the MTN Young Designer of the Year.  However, his hard work and resilience paid off and he was crowned as the winner. He takes us through the hard and arduous journey to achieving this feat.

Tell me a little about yourself. Where are you from? What’s your educational background?

FASHION FUSION 2013

FASHION FUSION 2013 is a youth empowerment initiative created to target and empower aspiring young designers who have found their passion for fashion and ventured into the fashion industry. The event will be organised to showcase young Nigerian designers, models with side attractions like performances and comedy skits.

In a screening process, the models and designers will pass through a preliminary stage from which only 15 outstanding designers & models will be chosen to showcase their creativity at the event. The designer with the best showcase will be determined by a panel of judges that will include Ejiro Amos Tafiri, Zizi Cardow, Adebayo Oke-Lawal, Uche Nnaji, Lanre DaSilva Ajayi and more. The model with the best catwalk will also be decided.

Nelson Mandela’s Style Remembered: His Signature Bold & Colorful Madiba Shirts

Former South African President Nelson Mandela, who served 27 years in prison for anti-apartheid activities and led South Africa into a new era, died at age 95 on December 5 21013

Much like Mandela’s freedom fighting comrades, his tireless campaign for civil rights and peace was heightened by the sophisticated and proud sartorial manner in which he presented himself. While the former president of South Africa certainly wore plenty of custom-made suits, it was his traditional Madiba shirts that comprised his distinguished and celebrated signature style. The bold and colorful printed shirts, named after Mandela’s African clan, became synonymous with the icon after he first debuted the look at South Africa’s first democratic Parliament in May 1994.

Ghanaian Star Sarkodie’s Design label “Sark” adds Female Jeans, Underwear & Shoes

Ghanaian rapper Sarkodie‘s Sark design label has taken an unexpected turn.

After launching his clothing line early this year, Sark has announced that they will be adding female collections to the Sark stock starting from January 2014. In an interview he had with News-One Newspaper Ghana, the rapper disclosed that his fashion brand will begin sale of female jeans, shoes and underwear.

According to the paper, Sark explained that it won’t be him “designing G-string for ladies per say. You know I have a partner who designs most of the stuff. She is a lady and we have also realized that we have a lot of females patronizing the shop, so we decided to capitalize on that and meet their needs.”

“I have not seen the ladies underwear myself but I believe they would be nice. I have seen the pictures of the other products.”
