Revealed: Why Chibok Girls Don’t Speak English

People have been asking questions why the school girls who were abducted by Boko Haram in Chibok community, Borno  did not communicate in English in the interviews they granted.

One of the freed schoolgirls, who did not give her name, disclosed that one of the reasons why they've been speaking hausa in the interviews is because of the trauma they are going through. They feel the Boko Haram insurgents are still watching them so they switch to Hausa, the dominant language in the North without realising it because the insurgents hate anything that has to do with Western education and the ability to speak the English language is an indication to them that one has Western education.

According to report, one of the reason for this situation is the poor standard of education and the quality of teachers in public schools across the state.

English language is secondary as most of the teachers in the rural areas and the students prefer speaking their own dialect either in the classrooms or during school hours.

It was also gathered from one of the teachers in the school, Mr. Amos Dawi, that Chibok and other schools in the state have no English or Mathematics teachers.

"Rarely would students from JSS I to SS III have these teachers throughout their stay in school. In fact, most of these students are not taught English properly from year one to their final year," he said.

He added that the students share a part of the blame as they are more devoted to farming than their education.

An educationist, Dr. James John attributed the poor quality of teachers to lack of training and retraining of the teachers by the Borno State Teaching Service Board.

A student named Yakubu Iliya said the teachers were to blame because if the ones who are qualified do not take their work seriously as they are hardly ever supervised by ministry officials.

The Chibok girls reflected the quality of teachers in public schools in Borno State. Over 95 per cent of students in public schools in the State cannot express themselves in English, although, their written English is reportedly better.

Jeans Wear Are Not Meant To Be Washed – Levi Strauss CEO

Levi Strauss CEO Chip Bergh has disclosed that jeans are never meant to be washed.

“We’re trying to educate the consumer,” a double-denim wearing Mr Bergh told Fortune magazine’s Andy Serwer.

Talking about his own pair of jeans that are a year old, he said they are “yet to see a washing machine”.

“I know that sounds totally disgusting. I know it does but believe me it can be done. You can spot clean it, you can air dry it, and it’s fine. I am yet to get a skin disease or anything else, it works.”

“If you talk to real denim aficionados they’ll tell you don’t wash your blue jeans, just take a sponge or toothbrush.”

Mr Berg, who used to run Proctor & Gamble’s Gillette business, said the company is trying to be the ultimate in “slow fashion” in contrast to the throw away mentality of clothing giants such as H&M.

“We are the ultimate in sustainable apparel. We build our products to last, if you treat ‘em right they will last you a long time — probably longer than most people’s waistlines,” he said.

The company has created a range of Wellthread products which use less energy and water and are easier to recycle. They’re also producing a line of “waterless” jeans which achieve the acid-wash look without using harsh bleach or chemicals.

Levi’s 501 jeans turned 141 yesterday.

How i Moved From Bad Boy To The Good Guy – Chidi Mokeme

Nollywood actor, Chidi Mokeme, has denied being a bad boy the way his roles might portray him to be because there is always a transition and there had been many different transitions in the course of his career.

According to the actor, you can’t compare modeling with movie. As a model, there is a certain look you must always wear. But movies, the impression is that it is either this guy is a nice looking play boy or the other way round. These two personalities have the same look, but they are just different mentally.

The actor stated that the fastest role one can get when coming into the movie industry is the muscle or bad guy roles.

Chidi stated that he wanted to play the lead role, but there was something holding him back, and that was physique and looks. Adding that he had to change that and stop going to the gym, stopped wearing my folded T-shirts. “I started wearing nice shirts that made me look so cool. Then I started looking more like the play boy, so I started losing the bodyguard roles and I got more nice boy roles. It was just different transitions.”

U.S Offers To Help Nigeria in Hunt For Abducted Girls.

Reports from Reuters. The United States said on Thursday it had offered to help Nigeria in its search for around 200 girls abducted by Boko haram. “We have been engaged with the Nigerian government in discussions on what we might do to help support their efforts to find and free these young women,” State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf told a daily briefing. “We will continue to have those discussions and help in any way we can.” Harf did not elaborate on the kind of assistance Washington is offering, but said: “We know Boko Haram is active in the area and we have worked very closely with the Nigerian government to build their capacity to fight this threat.” Separately, a group of U.S. senators introduced a resolution condemning the abduction and urging U.S. government assistance in the rescue effort. “The U.S. and the international community must work with the Nigerian government to ensure these girls are reunited with their families and deepen efforts to combat the growing threat posed by Boko Haram,” said Senator Chris Coons of Delaware, the chairman of the Senate’s African Affairs subcommittee, and one of the resolution’s six sponsors. In fiscal year 2012, the United States provided over $20 million in security assistance to Nigeria, part of that to build the country’s military, boost its capacity to investigate terrorist attacks and enhance the government’s forensic capabilities, she said.

US Embassy In Nigeria Warns Of Possible Terror Attack On Sheraton Hotel In Lagos

The United States Embassy in Nigeria today Friday May 2nd issued a warning to U.S citizens, asking them to avoid Adamawa, Borno and Yobe states, and also said 'groups associated with terrorism' are planning an attack on Sheraton Hotel in Lagos.

The Department of State warns U.S. citizens of the risks of travel to Nigeria and recommends that U.S. citizens avoid all travel to Adamawa, Borno, and Yobe states because of the May 14, 2013 state of emergency proclamation for those three states by the Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. As of late April, groups associated with terrorism allegedly planned to mount an unspecified attack against the Sheraton Hotel in Nigeria, near the city of Lagos. There was no further information regarding which of the two Sheraton Hotels in Lagos was the possible target, or if both of the Sheraton Hotels are possible targets. There is no further information regarding the timing or method of attack. U.S. citizens are cautioned to avoid these hotels at this time.

The security situation in the country remains fluid and unpredictable. The U.S. Department of State strongly urges U.S. citizens in Nigeria to keep personal safety and health in the forefront of your planning. We remind U.S. citizens to review your personal security plans; remain aware of your surroundings, including local events; and monitor local news stations for updates. Maintain a high level of vigilance and take appropriate steps to enhance your personal security..

The Department strongly advises U.S. citizens who travel to or reside in Nigeria to enroll in the State Department's Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP). U.S. citizens without internet access may enroll directly with the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate. STEP enrollment gives you the latest security updates, and makes it easier for the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate to contact you in an emergency.

Boko Haram Has More Sense Than This Jonathan’s Leadership –– Iyabo Obasanjo's New Letter

Iyabo Obasanjo, daughter of President Olusegun Obasanjo has written another open letter to the leadership of the Boko Haram sect. Although she accused those in President Goodluck Jonathan’s inner circle of hindering the resolution of the crisis posed by the Boko Haram insurgency, she faulted the insurgents for betraying the true essence of revolutionaries in directing their venom against the lower class.
"I am moved to write about the current state of affairs in Nigeria. My first inclination was to write to the President but since all letters to him seem to elicit only open derision and even more stupidity from his inner circle, I have decided to address my letter to a group also currently causing Nigerians a lot of pain and agony that may actually have more sense than the country’s leadership."
Read Iyabo's shocking letter below :

Dear Boko Haram,
The fact that you have taken arms against the Nigerian state is no surprise. The question should be why haven’t more young people organised themselves against the state?

Even the fact that your motto, ‘Against Western Education’ is in a way reasonable given the fact that your leader, martyred by the Nigerian state had university education and found no reasonable employment but had to resort to thuggery for politicians to survive, as the story goes.

He, like millions of Nigerian young people and college graduates, seeing a blighted future are doing anything to survive. They have become opportunistic desperados, almost sub human as the stepping on and trampling on each other to death at the Immigration employment debacle indicates.

Where you’re wrong
Where I think you have gotten it wrong are in two areas, if you can pardon my giving you some unsolicited advice. First, your victims are becoming more and more the people you should be attracting to your side. Take the Nyanya bus massacre.

The people that live in Nyanya are usually the clerks, messengers and other lowly office workers that live out in relative slums compared to the rest of Abuja and take public transportation to work to receive monthly salaries they barely get by on.

Consult any written work of successful revolutionaries be it French, Russian, Cuban or even the more recent uprooting of communism in Eastern Europe, to succeed you need the people to be on your side. Right now you are not achieving this.

You are targeting the group you need most. This does not make for a successful revolution but you are making yourselves into nuisances to the people and in the end while the state, including its military machine may not be able to conquer you, your downfall will be alienating these potential allies, i.e. the oppressed and down-trodden.

Secondly, the abduction of girls. It must be hard to stay in the bush as all male revolutionaries fending for yourselves with no sexual gratification.

Cuban example
But again, reading up on past bush revolutionaries like the Cuban, for example, indicates that they were able to convince some women to go voluntarily with them into the bush.

Somehow, revolutionary zeal does not include sexual abstinence and cooking and cleaning by yourselves.

Reading must be hard for you since you hate education but the past is a good guide to the future and if you can’t read, you are done for in organizing or succeeding in most endeavours as most things have been done before and reading up on how it was done can only serve as good guidance.

The parents of the girls you abducted are just trying to give their daughters a chance at having successful lives. Without an education there is very little anyone can achieve in this early 21st century.

I know living in the bush; it must still seem like the dark ages but the truth is that even with the lack of jobs and opportunities for young people in Nigeria currently, it is still better to be educated.

An educated university graduate who was selling food from a food cart ignited the Arab Spring which was spread by use of the internet which is hard to use if you are not educated.

There are writings, videos and stuff you post on the internet which I haven’t seen. But think of it, you can only post and use the internet because some of you have some education.
But in the end you have no control over the distribution of your advertising and recruiting information because as you may know, the internet is really part of the western system you despise.

Why you’re succeeding
The truth is that you have succeeded because the Nigerian state has failed to provide jobs and opportunity for its young people who you can now easily recruit. By disrupting education, you are adding to the burden of the people.

You may say, but how about our religious issue? Let the truth be told, just as there are indigenous southern Muslims, there are indigenous northern Christians even from your epicentre in Borno State and just as you are zealous for your religion, I don’t see them giving up their religion either.

The reasonable solution to this impasse would be for you to advocate for everyone to be able to practice their religion as they see fit with respect for each other’s beliefs.

Remember, a couple of centuries ago, all of our ancestors below the Sahara were all animists worshipping various ‘gods.’

This ‘One God’ — us against them situation — is a relatively recent one in our human history and you will be advised to let the originators fight it out and let your people be.
