Weeds, reptiles take over Abia new Govt House

The Abia State government has, in the last couple of years has been boasting about the ‘legacy projects’ it has built in Umuahia, the state capital. To rub it in, artistic impressions of the ‘projects’ are regularly advertised in the media and elsewhere in celebration of the ‘achievements’ of the present administration of Governor Theodore Orji.

One of the ‘legacy projects’ being talked about is a new Government House in Umuahia. As the tenure of the administration expires in a couple of months, one would expect that the new Government House would be at an advanced stage of construction, if not fully completed in view of the publicity it had received over time.

But that certainly is not the true state of affairs there. Indeed, it would be another wonder of the

world if the new Government House is completed before the tenure of the present administration ends

on May 29, next year. About a fortnight ago, this reporter visited the project site and was utterly

shocked at the level of the project. It could, in fact, be described as an abandoned project, as there was no sign of construction going on at the time of the

visit. The site has been overtaken by overgrown weeds, making it a natural habitat for reptiles and

snakes.
