How To Avoid Career Blunders
- Understand You: What are you good at doing or what do you enjoy doing? That should form your career choice or guide you in choosing a career path. Don't be too quick to pursue a career not meant for you, especially while unemployed.
- Job Hopping: Switching jobs too frequently makes a bad impression to your employer. You come off to an employer as someone who lacks commitment, reliability, perseverance and a bit self-centered.
- Look Beyond Money: Don't choose a career because it pays more with no growth opportunities. The charm of money fades away over a period of time, while career growth and skill enhancement takes you high.
- Plan Your Career: You need to plan your career for both short term goals and long term goals so as to avoid getting stagnant at a particular position.
- Don't Take Work For Granted: When assigned a task be responsible for it and take ownership of it. Ensure you perform your job with good commitment and give in 100% effort or go extra mile.
- Don't Resist Changes: Don't be a river, flow with the water like a feather. Try new changes and solutions. When your colleagues or boss comes up with a change program, embrace it and give it the needed support.
- Accept Your Mistakes: Don't be stubborn and unteachable; accept your mistakes and try correcting them. By doing so, u prove to your employer that you are teachable and they can go ahead and invest on trainings on you.
- Put In Your Best: Don't get a job and become complacent. Even the bible says, 'woe to him is at ease in Zion..."(Amos 6:1). You need to be the best at what you do. Strive for excellence; sharpen your skills and competences.
- Be Ready To Serve: You must be prepared to serve others to excel in your career. In this context, service means to take ownership of the work you are doing. You may not be the owner of the company you work in, but you can work as though it were yours.
- The God Factor: To avoid career blunders, God comes first. Jer. 29:11.
"We all have dreams. But in order to make dreams come into reality, it takes an awful lot of determination, dedication, self-discipline and effort".
